Portland Digital Exec Reminds E-commerce Sites to Advise Customers of TSL Requirements
June 01, 2018 – – Augusto Beato reminded e-commerce websites transitioning to Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.1 encryption or better to inform their customers to update operating systems.
It is necessary for e-commerce sites to transition to TSL 1.1 by June 30, 2018, to avoid losing their ability to receive credit card payments.
Anything older than Windows Server 2008 will not support TLS 1.1 and 1.2, so it is a must to use at least a 2012 version, which is likely to support future PCI standards for a longer period will require fewer updates.
However, older operating systems may not be able to access or connect to your site after June 30. So customers should be informed about the situation.
“Email your customers that you have updated your data encryption standards to let them know why they may not be able to see your site if their operating systems are outdated,” said Beato, CEO of Portland SEO.

The TLS encrypts the credit card and customer information passed between the server and browser to keep it secure and private.
When migrating to TLS 1.1, or the preferred TLS 1.2, IT managers should assure that the server their site is hosted on is compatible with this new protocol.
Furthermore, e-commerce sites must also disable their servers’ ability to fall back/ default to SSL or TLS 1.0.
