Great Food and Board Gaming – a Successful Combo for Local Harrisburg Restaurant.
After being open for just two years; every table is full on a Saturday Night at The Game Table Cafe. Some with typical café customers enjoying a latte or a sandwich, others with gamers surrounded by friends or family and having a great time, interacting, laughing, and smiling. The place is abuzz with people some chatting about the latest in sci fi, fantasy, or whatever else is on their minds while sipping their cold brew or nibbling on a muffin. Others are browsing the game library and talking with the Game Guru/Barista about the games they want to try for the next adventure with their friends. At the counter, busy employees rush between customers to serve coffee, sandwiches, snacks, or to ring up a customer’s game purchases. This is The Game Table Café on any weekend in Mechaicsburg, Pennsylvania, and the place is hopping as they celebrate their two-year anniversary.
In an age of video games, electronic connectivity, and on demand video; how does board gaming enter into the equation for a successful restaurant. The Game Table Café is one of many board game cafes that have recently been popping up across the country. However, this is not hobby store turned snack provider. After two years of operations, The Game Table Café has been turning heads as a local Restaurant phenom as well. Last year Harrisburg Magazine awarded the Café the Reader’s Choice Award for Suburban Restaurant. This year their fandom has put them in the running for three of Harrisburg Magazine’s Simply The Best Awards; Simply The Best Coffeehouse, Simply The Best Date Night Restaurant, and Simply The Best Suburban Restaurant. According to Tom Keegan, owner and manager, it is all about building community and providing a place to connect with other people over great food and something fun to do.
The friendly atmosphere will be the first thing you experience when you enter The Game Table Café. “Hi, welcome to The Game Table Café” is rattled off time and again as new customers enter. This is usually followed by, “How can we help you.” and a smile. Keegan believes community building starts with being friendly. “People need to socialize,” says Tom Keegan. “I think they’re seeking community, a place to safely be closer to others and to have, face-to-face “in-person” experiences…a place where they can build communities and friendships.” The staff at The Game Table Café strives to be that place every day.
Community building and social interaction is definitely part of The Game Table Café experience. It seems to be working as people from Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg and the greater Central Pennsylvania seem drawn to the café. Recently hosting International Tabletop Day at the café; they had a sellout crowd with people traveling from Baltimore, Lancaster and State College simply to enjoy the day with friends at the Game Table Café. Keegan thinks that, board game cafes , like The Game Table Café, meet an inherent need in our society for interaction and fun with other people. “The Game Table Café provides a safe place for people to gather for drinks and food, to interact over a game, to dialogue, discuss and enjoy each other’s company. Plus great food and drinks certainly can’t hurt.
