English non league football club Oadby Town have caused controversy by announcing they are considering their emblem.
The team, who play in the ninth tier of English football, have had over 40,000 people view and engage in the debate which has cause huge polarising of opinions.
With crowds of less that 500, Oadby Town are one of the lesser supported teams in a country where the vast wealth of the multi billion pound English Premier League (EPL) dominates the sport.
Oadby Town chairman, Sacha Jak, who leads the committee proposing the change said, “Its well known and perfectly obvious at our level that teams can’t compete with the EPL, so we decided the only way to increase awareness, and hopefully our fan base, is to modernise and update our offering.
”The emblem update was one of the first things we thought of to help change people’s perception. From a single Tweet it has snowballed.”
”What we didn’t realise was how polarising and emotionally charged a topic such as the emblem update could be. It’s taken us quite by surprise and has certainly put our modest but ambitious club on the map globally.”
Comments and opinions have been coming in from as far afield as Australia and the United States, a fact not gone unnoticed by Sacha, who added, “We take our inspiration to boost the visibility of the club from all over the world, in every type of sport. So how they do things at this level in places like the USA has really motivated us.”
”We want every game to be an event and want to draw in as many different and new people as possible whether they like football or not. We aim to a fun and family friendly place to be enjoyed by everyone.”
The club has big plans for the short and long terms including installing a 3G artificial playing surface which will transform the club’s commercial revenues. Many local amateur and academic teams already prebooking timeslots, at least a year before the pitch is due to be laid.
Additionally, the Oadby Town committee want to extend and increase their links with all areas of the community, This is something that will place the club at the centre of the community and a venue for all the family, football lovers or not.
Meanwhile though, with just a few days left before the club decide on changing the emblem or not, this small club in Leicestershire, England are certainly making waves in the footballing world.
