Sending a print job to a printer can be a confusing process, especially if you aren’t familiar with the correct file formats, paper sizes, bleeds, trim marks and colours RGB and CMYK. Gold Coast Printers have helped clarify these points.

One of the most difficult parts of a print project is working out how to send artwork to the printer. Having completed a beautiful design, it is sent to the printer and they send it back saying “we want something changed” which can be completely confusing, and is often in “printersspeak!”

Print Ready Artwork simply means providing a file that the printer can print directly from. Most printers do not check content but do check quality of pictures and of course if the artwork was done by a graphic artist it should be good to go.

Gold Coast Printers prefer your files to be PDF’s, they also accept jpegs. If your artwork is double sided it should always be sent on two separate PDF’s.

It is also important to make sure that the artwork is the correct size (with bleed and trim marks if needed) Australian printers work in imperial size (A1,A2,A3,A4 etc.) so be careful not to send US sizing, and be aware that Word often defaults to US sizes.

When Printers talk about “Bleed” they are talking about the extended area past the trim marks, which is trimmed away, so that the colour can go to the edge of the document. This is generally 3mm bleed for items such as business cards and a 4mm bleed all the way around for booklets. Cut or trim marks should be selected when designing the project, generally printers only want trim marks not any other markings as they only get in the way.

Colour variations can be caused by CMYK colours not RGB colours. What does this mean? As Mr Guy Morris from Gold Coast Printers explained “CMYK colour is for print and RGB colour is for your computer screen. If you send artwork in RGB colours your colours may vary from the what you originally intended”.
