Studies Reveal That a Disorganized Home Causes Stress, Fatigue and Depression

Mirella House, a company that manufacturers closet organizers and storage containers, has recently commented on research that highlights the number of stress-related diseases caused by disorganized homes.

Marietta, Georgia based Mirella’s House has zeroed in on making items, such as closet organizers and storage containers, which may be effective as stress relievers, thus restoring calm and well-being to the consumers who use them.

Samuel Whitfield, a spokesperson for the company, says: “A minimalist lifestyle is a goal toward which people today aspire. They want the freedom and peace of mind that comes with no clutter and more elbow room. A clean, organized home is free of junk strewn around and shoes covering closet floors and is so much easier to be kept that way.”

In a study published by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Inc., entitled “No Place Like Home: Home Tours Correlate with Daily Patterns of Mood and Cortisol”, 60 dual-income spouses were asked to conduct week-long self-guided home tours to codify their levels of stress related to domestic life.

Levels of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, were measured on the participants. Scientists have determined that high cortisol levels decrease immune function and bone density, affect learning and memory, increase weight gain, heart disease, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. In fact, chronic stress and high cortisol levels also increase risk for depression, mental conditions, and decrease life expectancy.

Cortisol levels were measured four times each day (upon rising, just before lunch, just prior to leaving work and just before going to sleep). The analyses showed that women with higher stressful home scores had increased depressed mood over the course of the day, whereas women with higher restorative home scores had decreased depressed mood over the day. The use of organizers in the home helps brings about the often sought-after minimalist utopia.

Mirella’s House has designed products to make home life more organized and clutter-free.
