This is the 31st book Pike has authored. The book was written to show trainers, teachers, and facilitators how to turn smarphones from irritants to learning devices in the classroom and meetings. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because this is the first and only book on using smartphones as learning tools. It revals a dozen learning environments where smartphones can be used – like face to face and webinars and 17 specific activities that can use smartphones for engagement..
Expert’s Guide to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in Training sets its main focus on smartphones as learning devices not classrom disrupters. Readers will likely find a particular interest in there is a single app that allows all 17 activities to be done via smartphone including Q&A, polling, and goal setting. The book’s cover art was created by the author himself and Expert’s Guide to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in Training is being released by CTT Press.
Bob Pike is known globally as the “trainer’s trainer”. He is the only person to hold the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and CPAE – Speakers Hall of Fame credentials from the National Speakers Association and be named a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) Fellow by the Association for Talent Development (ATD).
Bob was an early proponent of the instructor-led, participant-centered classroom. He believes the one doing the most talking is doing the most learning. So he constantly looks for ways to involve participants in the learning process. Using a single app to involve learners in multiple ways using their smartphones is the latest methodology that he is using and teaching other trainers to use..
When asked about why they wrote the book, Pike said: “In almost every classroom I observe we are trying to manage participants behavior around smartphones – no texting, no emails during class, etc. Why not turn the device into a learning tool?”
Pike has hopes that the book will inspire trainers to more fully engage their participants in the learning process using smartphones – to continue to use the smartphone app to help with performance support and transfer after the initial training is over. This positive outlook from the author is certainly testament to his optimism considering some of the mishaps during its creation. At one point the cover worked fine when it was indie published, but was suddenly the wrong size for createspace..
In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking my wife and editor, Andrea, The UMU App team – especially Dongshuo Li amd Emily Ullberg for their part in the creation of the book, saying: “If it hadn’t been for the UMU app I might never have written this book — “
