Attitudes Towards Disabled People More Positive Now That Ever before in the UK

Following a survey carried out in August of this year, Ability Superstore has gained real insight into the public’s perception of disabilities in the UK, as well as their opinions on whether the government actively provides enough support to those with a disability.

United Kingdom – September 12, 2018 / /

The survey of 152 respondents in Great Britain found that the public perception of disability is, overall, positive, especially in the case of people’s attitude towards the treatment of disabled people in often stressful or public situations.

Significant Progress In Perceptions, But The Authorities Could Do More

Questions asked in the survey included whether respondents know anyone who is disabled, with over 19% of the total participants acknowledging that they have a close family member who is disabled. Over 11% of those surveyed identify as disabled themselves. Participants were also asked if they would be comfortable talking to a disabled person, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with more than 73% saying they feel comfortable talking to someone with a disability.

Response to the public perception of what the UK government is doing to support individuals with disabilities was slightly less promising, with the majority of respondents — more than 56% — stating that they do not feel enough is being done to assist those with additional needs. On a more positive, note, however, over 81% of respondents said they would be happy to give up their seat on public transport to a disabled person.

Emily Ryan, Marketing and Social Media Manager at Ability Superstore, was delighted with the results of the survey: “Seeing that so many people would be happy to give up their seat on public transport for a disabled person is an overwhelmingly positive result and it clearly shows that the UK’s perception towards those with disabilities is improving and that the social stigma associated with disability is reducing over time,” she said.

In 2014, disability charity Scope conducted a groundbreaking survey, titled “current attitudes towards disabled people.” That survey found that 67% of the British public felt uncomfortable talking to disabled people. This research, on the other hand, shows that this has fallen to just 27%. Ryan says, “it’s heartening to see that, in just four years, attitudes have changed for the better.”
