When asked to comment, King said, “Dissolving a marriage can bring with it extreme feelings of loss or anxiety, particularly for children. But I think there are some things that parents can do to make this difficult experience easier for their children..”

First and foremost, according to King, “Parents should not make disparaging remarks about the other parent to the children, should not discuss the substance of their dispute with them, should not show them any court filings and should not tell them about any court proceedings. All such communications are strictly prohibited by the courts, and for good reason. There is no need for children to be put in the middle between their divorcing parents or exposed to the details of their divorce case.”

When asked to elaborate, King stated, “Many parents fall into the trap of talking poorly about their former spouse in front of their children when emotions are running high. However, this puts enormous pressure on kids and can often make your children feel like they must express loyalty to one parent or the other. Moreover, it can get you held in contempt of court and seriously damage your case.”

Second, to the extent that the children are obviously going to know that “something is up,” it is vitally important for parents to say the right things in order to put them at as much ease and help keep their anxiety to a minimum. King recommends that
children be told, carefully and neutrally, that their parents are going through a divorce, but that they need not worry because both parents will always love them, and everything is going to be o.k. King says, “If possible, both parents should be present for the ‘divorce talk,’ instead of each parent having separate conversations with the kids. The information presented should also be easy for them to understand. The simpler the explanation, the better.”

King added that it’s always a good idea for parents to tell their kids that they are in no way at fault when it comes to the divorce.

According to King, “One useful way to help your child through the separation process is to let them know in advance of any change in living arrangements. You can even allow them to be involved in furnishing the new home or apartment, which can help them feel like they have some control in their lives.” he said. Again, however, there is to be no discussion about court proceedings and no disparagement of the other parent.

King also feels that children of parents going through a divorce can often benefit from counseling by a professional therapist. “”A therapist will encourage kids to express their feelings and talk about them in a way that they may not feel comfortable doing with their parents, and that would otherwise be inappropriate in any event.

One common pitfall that KIng also mentioned was to avoid bad mouthing an ex for the sake of your children.

“Always keep in mind that children react in their own ways to their family separating, and they require ongoing support. In addition to using these tips, consulting a family expert or therapist might also be a good idea for further guidance,” King said.
