A former Oklahoma state representative, Mike Mass, and his wife, Suzanne Mass, were involved in a fatality collision on December 7, 2018 in Atoka County. Suzanne Mass, age 69, was killed in the collision that occurred on U.S. 69 near Stringtown.

Mike Mass was traveling on Fred’s Fish Camp Road. He was attempting to make a northbound turn onto the highway when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The cause of the collision is under investigation, but it has been confirmed that neither Suzanne nor Mike were wearing seatbelts.

Suzanne was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Mass was subsequently taken to McAlester Regional Hospital and later transferred to Tulsa’s St. Francis Hospital in critical condition. The other driver sustained injuries as well and was taken to Atoka County Hospital in stable condition.

Mike Mass, 67, is a member of the Oklahoma Democratic Party and served as its former state chairman from 1991 to 2002 and again from 2003 to 2005. He left the Legislature after his last position due to term limits.

In a tragic turn of events, a second fatality collision occurred nearby as a tractor-trailer attempted to bypass the scene of the first accident. The truck driver attempted to enter the highway at Fred’s Fish Camp Road and was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the State of Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, Tulsa had 51 accident-related fatalities in 2016. Oklahoma City is the only city ahead of Tulsa for fatal vehicle collisions in the state. A majority of the fatalities occurred on Tulsa’s city streets, followed by urban U.S. highways and interstate highways.

Tulsa car accident attorney Charles Bryan Alred shared, “While statistics show that fatalities may be declining, any preventable death is still one too many. Tulsa has the second highest number of fatalities in the state, and drivers need to take additional steps to stay safe on the roads. Wearing your seatbelt is an easy way to help protect yourself in an accident. Seatbelts save lives, so it’s imperative you wear yours every time you get in a vehicle, no matter whether you’re the driver or a passenger. This can be the difference between being injured or pronounced dead at the scene.”
