Sandy Chau Says It is Time for Asian Americans to Embrace Civic Engagement

Founder’s vision sees Asian American communities nationwide collaborating and working in harmony to more effectively shape civic life and the political process, Civic Leadership USA reports

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – April 4, 2019 /MarketersMedia/

Asian Americans make up 6 percent (or about 22 million) of the American population. According to recent data, this number will surpass 40 million by 2040. It is a community of people who work hard. However, their efforts are often unrecognized. Likewise, many are not afforded equal opportunities that would enable them to contribute to society. There is a need for a change. Mr. Sandy Chau, the founder of Civic Leadership USA (CLUSA), is the impetus behind that change.

The Challenge

In his opening remarks at the Asian USA 2018: Asian American & Pacific Islander Leadership Summit, Mr. Chau referenced an old African proverb, “If you want to go far, fly together.”

Asian Americans are hard workers whose prime motivation is to provide for their families. It is a commendable quality. But in their efforts, they oftentimes lose their sense of identity and community. Furthermore, their voices are not being heard and the benefits they could contribute to society are lost.

The Way Forward

Mr. Chau stressed the importance of uniting Asian American communities all across the United States with a collective purpose. That way they can produce a more considerable impact. For that to happen, Asian Americans need to practice civic engagement and participate in the political process.

Mr. Chau maintains a sense of urgency about his mission because he believes that the Asian American leaders of tomorrow need to become visible today. It is essential for people to bravely step up to the challenge and this is where the community needs civic leaders. Civic leaders should participate in all facets of local communities and governments. Their core mission should be served. Civic engagement is the way to advocate for change that will benefit all.

How to Get Involved

The motto of CLUSA is “Diverse in Leadership. Inclusive in Participation”. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Mateo, California, CLUSA was Mr. Chau’s vision. The core mission of CLUSA is to mobilize and empower Asian American communities to collaborate and work in unity. The goal is to establish a countrywide network of civic-minded organizations. The principal activity of CLUSA is the forums that train and prepare young Asian Americans so they can participate in civic life and the political process. The forums are non-partisan and open to all Americans – anyone can participate regardless of their country of origin or ethnic group. So far CLUSA has organized more than 39 Civic Leadership Forums in 27 cities and 13 states.
