Fairview Heights Attorney To Publish 2019 Survey Of Elder Abuse
April 30, 2019 – – Fairview Heights, Illinois based Jerome, Lindsay & Salmi, LLP is pleased to announce that attorney Jaye R. Lindsay has been tapped to write two comprehensive chapters for the elder law section of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education (IICLE). This statewide organization provides continuing education resources and guides for attorneys throughout Illinois.
Lindsay is a local nursing home abuse lawyer who was the author of two continuing education chapters back in 2015. The revised and updated versions of these chapters are due for release sometime in late summer, 2019. These resources will become available to attorneys who maintain access to the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education resources. Both chapters have served thus far as a reference for attorneys who practice in the areas of probate, elder law, and elder abuse litigation across the state.
In 2015, Lindsay helped overhaul the organization’s recurring chapter entitled, “Survey of Elder Abuse in Illinois,” which was included in the IICLE’s ‘Advising Elderly Clients and Their Families’ publication. This chapter has remained a thorough and detailed account of the various elder rights statutes and regulations that attorneys must understand when advising elderly clients. In addition to this chapter, Lindsay has co-authored a second chapter with a prominent neuropsychologist in the Chicagoland area, which focused on the use of neuropsychological evidence in litigation, specifically in elder law and probate practice. This chapter will also be getting an overhaul in the summer of 2019.
No doubt these chapters have been a great resource to many attorneys throughout Illinois. However, four years after the first chapter was published, the IICLE determined that, in order to stay relevant as an educational resource, both chapters must be revised and a new version must be published. As new data has surfaced since the chapters were first published, it is expected that the revised publications will expand even further upon every topic that is discussed within. Lindsay’s work will serve as an educational resource at the IICLE for years to come.
Lindsay’s career has primarily been focused on bringing justice to those who have suffered elder abuse of any kind. He states that nursing home negligence occurs more often than people think. Even though statistics of elder abuse in nursing home facilities suggest that nursing home abuse is quite a common occurrence, no one wants to think that this could happen to their loved ones.
He says, “Family members often come to us after being told by nursing home staff that their loved one suffered an ‘unpreventable’ injury.” Despite these claims and others like it, Lindsay maintains that “Something is only unpreventable if you actually take steps to prevent it and fail. A lot of people just don’t realize what all counts as abuse or neglect. There are many tools and procedures available that can be employed to prevent injuries, so if none of those tools are used and none of the procedures are followed, it’s entirely unacceptable.”
Lindsay is committed to helping older Illinoisans and their families who have been affected by poor nursing home care receive justice and compensation for their injuries. “Only by routinely and consistently holding large nursing home corporations accountable will real change ever happen,” says Lindsay.
