The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute in Canada has today, issued information from clinical studies that suggest new medication under trial for obesity will also help to cure anxiety disorders.

The study has identified a biological pathway which links both of these growing problems in society.

Hsiao-Huei Chen, scientist at the institute stated that the existence of the pathway is good news and the fact that anxiety and obesity may be treatable by the same drug is what make it so exciting.

By establishing that a common biological link exists between obesity and anxiety, this means that the same drug can be used to treat both disorders.

As is often the case the research started in another field however researchers, including Chen, were looking at a gene called LM04 which assisted brain development and regeneration, when they realized that those test subjects who were found lacking in the gene, tended to have obesity and anxiety.

This new research, together with a previous study, shows that an enzyme called PTP1B plays a crucial role in a molecular pathway that links LMO4; anxiety, obesity and the body’s natural marijuana (endocannabinoid) system.

When the researchers used a drug (trodusquemine) that specifically inhibits the activity of PTP1B, they found that both anxiety and obesity were reduced.

“Our approach lets the brain fix itself by simply re-instating the appropriate level of PTP1B,” said Chen.

Supporting the links with Anxiety and obesity on 6th March, researchers at the University of South Australia, lead by Dr Natalie Parletta, confirmed that the Mediterranean Diet also leads to a reduction in depression and improvement in mental health.

Researchers said omega-3 in particular, a fatty acid found in fish, plays a vital role in maintaining and improving mental health and stability.

The current ways to treat anxiety, range from prescription medication to natural remedies. The treatment will depend on the type of anxiety disorder now however there will be a larger focus diets and food types

Current Treatments include:

Diet – The Mediterranean diet consists of fresh plant-based foods such as vegetables, legumes, fruit, nuts, seeds and olives, extra virgin olive oil, fish, with moderate red wine intake.

Exercise – Lifestyle changes such as more fresh air and exercise also help with anxiety treatment, especially when part of a specified treatment plan.

Drugs – On some occasions medicinal help is required, any such treatment should be done under the care of a physician.

Counselling – Suffers may benefit from counselling. Many treatments will involve some sort of cognitive-behavioural therapy to help the sufferer learn how to deal with anxiety attacks.

Research now supports diet as a major contributing factor to anxiety as well as obesity.
