In an extensive international review of dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment, Mental Health Resources, of Memphis Tennessee, ranks highest in overall treatment satisfaction.
A recent international systematic review of the dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment literature was conducted to synthesize existing evidence about treatment satisfaction among complicated clients with substance abuse and mental health disorders. Client perceptions and experience of care are increasingly recognized as important indicators of treatment quality. Mental Health Resources, Memphis, TN ranked among the highest in overall treatment satisfaction of dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment programs.
The study authors examined satisfaction with treatment received, variations in satisfaction by type of treatment intervention, diagnosis, and the influence of other factors on treatment satisfaction. After a rigorous examination of nearly 2,100 international studies of dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment programs conducted since 1970, the authors excluded 2000+ studies that failed to meet rigorous methodological screening criteria. This resulted in 27 studies that met the standards of size, reliability, substance abuse, study methodology and dual diagnosis substance abuse treatment focus. Mental Health Resources’ published client satisfaction study results were reviewed and judged as sufficiently rigorous to have been included in this international review. Dr. Ed Wise, President of Mental Health Resources, said, “We are pleased to see the quality of our research, treatment outcomes and client satisfaction recognized and validated in this international study.”
Of the 27 studies that met inclusion criteria, treatment aimed at treating both the substance abuse and co-occurring psychiatric disorders (referred to as integrated treatment) resulted in greater client satisfaction than traditional treatment without an explicit dual diagnosis disorder focus. In standard treatment with only a substance abuse focus, the dual diagnosis disorder clients tended to be less satisfied with their treatment experience compared to single diagnosis substance abuse clients. Client demographic and symptom severity variables were unrelated to treatment satisfaction. However, client satisfaction tended to be linked to other treatment variables, such as the therapeutic relationship, receipt of medication and perceived usefulness of treatment.
This review showed that most dual diagnosis disorder clients reported being more satisfied with their treatment experience when their treatment addressed both their substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. Integrated treatment, which simultaneously addresses both substance abuse and psychiatric disorders, resulted in particularly high levels of satisfaction compared to non-integrated substance abuse treatment. Wise went on to say that “the finding that dual diagnosis disorder patients tended to be less satisfied in traditional substance abuse programs is no surprise because the majority of patients who abuse substances have dual diagnosis disorders that require integrated treatment…substance abuse treatment that fails to address associated psychiatric conditions is experienced as less satisfactory in addressing the complex needs of the dual diagnosis patient.” Mental Health Resources’ integrated treatment program for dual diagnosis clients ranked among the highest in patient satisfaction worldwide, making it a leader in providing integrated treatment to dual diagnosis patients.
