Winter Weather Sends Drivers Scrambling For All-Weather Traction

Dropping temperatures and snowfall have drivers looking for better ways to help keep their vehicles on the road during inclement winter weather and one rotomolding company may have the answer.

In many parts of the country, early October temperatures had families scratching their heads curious to know if the summer was ever going to come to an end. However, as October closes out, some parts of the country are suddenly dealing with record snowfalls. In Chicago, Wednesday October 30th set a historical record of 1.2 inches of snow for the day, eclipsing the previous mark of 0.7 inches that fell on October 30, 1923 according to the National Weather Service.

The first trace of the snow season always brings on heightened fear and anxiety for some drivers of certain types of vehicles, such as pick-up trucks. Snow and rain conditions have always plagued pick-up trucks with traction issues, due to the weight distribution of the vehicles and empty truck beds. Some pick-up truck drivers historically opt to increase pick-up truck traction by loading the bed of the truck with sandbags, cinder-blocks and bags of concrete or even large, heavy steel plates. While these may provide some additional weight, they are also messy and potentially dangerous, as the packaging to the sandbags or concrete deteriorates in wet, winter weather.

Granger Plastics Company, a custom rotational molding supplier based in Middletown, Ohio, developed an all-weather traction device appropriately named the “Weight-Mate”. The Weight-Mate is a set of rotomolded tanks ranging from 6’ in length to 8’ in length that are placed in the bed of a pick-up truck and then filled with water. The water will eventually freeze in appropriate temperatures, distributing the weight evenly across the bed of the pick-up truck. While the 6’ tanks can add up to 550 pounds, the 8 foot lengths can add an impressive 833 pounds total. Due to the low-profile, 6 inch height and strong, durable nature of rotationally molded products, the Weight-Mates can be top loaded to continue using your truck’s bed for your daily routine. When the warmer, Spring temperatures show up, the Weight-Mates are easily drained via a threaded opening on the tanks.

Granger also developed the multi-purpose “Water-Mates”, which like the Weight-Mates act as additional weight for the back of a pick-up truck, while being manufactured from food grade polyethylene, which allows the potable water to be used for drinking, showering, etc. In place of the drain is a spigot that makes for easy dispensing of water. The Water-Mates are perfect for the off-road or camping enthusiast.
