Los Angeles, CA – April 7, 2015 – According to the Plastic Ban Report, twenty-six plastic bans are due to come into law in 2015, and the report says that they expect to actually see even more than that.
As of last count, there are currently 178 laws forbidding retailers from providing consumers with plastic bags. As cities across the nation are making it illegal for stores to give out plastic bags, many consumers are confused and asking themselves what they are supposed to bring their groceries home in? And even though it feels like Americans have always used plastic shopping bags, that’s not the case. In fact, the first plastic bag wasn’t invented until 1957, and it was only used to hold lunches for school children. It wasn’t until 1977 that grocers began to use plastic bags at checkout lanes. By 1996, eight out of every ten bags used were plastic, and today, just a mere thirty-eight years later, 60,000 plastic bags are used in the United States every five seconds.
No wonder Americans are confused by the new laws. For a great many of them, using plastic bags when shopping is the only thing they’ve ever known. But there is a dark side to the use of so many plastic bags. The bags aren’t fully recyclable, and unfortunately, they fill landfills and the marine ecosystem, damaging both the environment and animals and sea life. For instance, sea turtles prey upon jellyfish, which closely resemble a plastic bag. When the turtles eat the bags, they are harmed, or even die from it. The cleanup costs associated with plastic bags are an estimated $428 million per year in California alone.
Most consumers are okay with the new laws, but the bans have created a problem for many people. What should they use to carry their groceries and other purchases home? So when cities and counties began passing laws banning stores from using plastic bags, consumers were at a loss. So far, nineteen states and numerous cities have passed the laws, with more states anticipated to pass similar laws this year. All of this has made sustainable shopping bags a burgeoning market.
But even though consumers are confused about the new way they will be forced to shop, they are still picky, and they don’t just want any old shopping bag. Americans are individuals, and they like their clothes, jewelry, cars, houses, and yes, even their shopping bags to make a statement. These days, people can find shopping bags to fit just about any personality. For instance, one company produces a grocery shopping bag aptly called LA Pop Expandable shopping bags. They are eco-friendly reusable shopping totes that hold up to 20 pounds each. The bags are shaped like vegetables and fruit – perfect for a grocery store outing. The bags look like limes, grapes, watermelon, strawberries, pineapples, and carrots and sold in a 5 pack for only $12.99.
Today’s consumers are dedicated to protecting the environment and are cost conscience when it comes saving tax dollars, so most of the them support the new plastic ban laws that are sweeping the nation. Consumers still want stylish and convenient accessories and manufacturers understand this. It’s widely predicted that consumers will continue to have a multitude of options that fit all of their demands: Eco-friendly reuseable shopping bags that fit their personal style are here to stay.
