Volunteers from the Fort Worth Personal Injury Firm, Eberstein Witherite, LLP law firm will be assisting the North Texas Food Bank with its effort to provide families in need with access to meals on April 29th. The firm is extending its support as part of a continued commitment to give back to the Texas communities it serves.
Poverty in Texas Communities
Texas is one state with a relatively high percentage of people living in poverty compared to other states. The United States Census Bureau has stated that 17.6% of the state’s population lived below the poverty level, according to data analyzed from 2009-2013. The national average for that same time frame was 15.4%. Census data also states that in Fort Worth 19.3% of persons live below the poverty level.
Food insecurity is one outcome of poverty for many families in the state. The issue is stated to impact households with children at higher rates. According to data from the North Texas Food Bank, in 2012, an estimated 49 million Americans lived in households categorized as food insecure, or lacking access to food and proper nutrition.
Fort Worth personal injury attorney Kris Heald of the Eberstein Witherite firm says of the matter, “Hunger has long been a critical issue in North Texas and as a community we have a responsibility to do what it takes to help reduce the numbers of children and families that go hungry due to multiple problems that lead to poverty. Many parents work hard at jobs that they don’t earn enough at to cover the nutritional needs of their family month to month, and sometimes really need the extra help.”
