Thursday, April 9th, will be a day to remember for many Illinois residents, as a destructive series of tornadoes formed, touching down just west of Chicago. More than 20 people were injured with 2 dead from the storm and tornado outbreaks. This in turn, has created a growing demand for Illinois Storm Shelters.

With wind speeds estimated to be up to 200 mph, the tornado was given a preliminary rating of an EF-4. This rating was based on the level of destruction caused and would be confirmed thru an aerial survey.

Illinois is a state that has almost two months of thunderstorm activity throughout every year besides being vulnerable to at least 35 tornadoes. This makes it important that every home which is isolated, or in open spaces, consider the installation of storm shelters.

One Illinois resident was found dead in the bathroom of her home. It was reported that she had spoken with her sister moments before the tornado hit. “She apparently tried to wait out the storm which was the right thing to do but unfortunately her house was struck by the path of the tornado,” Dekalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said.

Thursday’s EF-4 tornado was the state’s worst since Nov. 17, 2013, when a storm destroyed Washington, Illinois.

Thursday’s storm and tornado outbreak have created a spike in Tornado Shelter sales for one underground shelter supplier. Granger Plastics has seen a tremendous increase in phone calls, emails and sales inquiries since the deadly outbreak.

A storm shelter can give added security and can provide a place where a family can easily wait out the tornado, or high storm, while winds expend their energy outside. The preferred location for such shelters will be in lower areas, even basements. If low lying areas are not easily available, it is best consider building a storm shelter that is below the ground. Building an underground shelter allows to get the full protection of the ground, as the shelter is situated below the ground, and offers no resistance to the high winds and allows them to pass over the affected location. It also allows maximum use of the extra space that in a yard, instead of cannibalizing parts of the home, while at the same time allowing to maintain a normally landscaped yard above ground.

Storm shelters are best built from durable materials that can withstand the harsh elements of being underground or outside. Every storm shelter must have adequate provision for ventilation, as this will allow occupants to spend many hours with other family members and yet remain fairly comfortable if necessary for that duration. Storm shelters must have entrances that are properly protected, easy to access for all family members, and also easy to batten down to be really away from the effects of a storm.

A suitable storm shelter must have enough room for all of the family members, including pets to stay in comfortably for the duration of time that the family will occupy the shelter. The shelter must have sufficient lighting and emergency supplies of water, food and medicines in case of emergency use. Once the underground shelter is built or installed, many experts suggest checking the emergency supply stocks at regular intervals, and renew them when necessary. Keeping some tools like a shovel and axe as part of an emergency preparedness kit will help protect the family, as there is an extreme level of uncertainty as to what conditions will exist outside, once the storm has passed over.
