Texas Native Memorializes Mother Martha Patricia Munoz with Saxophone Commission
Stephanie A. Munoz, El Paso native and current master’s student at the New England Conservatory, will premiere a deeply personal commission for saxophone and string quartet, Coronam Collis, by young composer Stephanie Ann Boyd.
April 28 2015, Boston MA – Stephanie A. Munoz, El Paso native and current master’s student at the New England Conservatory, will premiere a deeply personal commission for saxophone and string quartet, Coronam Collis, by Stephanie Ann Boyd in Brown Hall, Boston, this Saturday, May 2nd at 8:00 in the evening.
Munoz’s mother Martha Patricia Munoz passed away suddenly several years ago, and for Munoz, every spring since has brought with it painful memories of that loss. As she prepared the music for her graduating recital at the New England Conservatory, Stephanie decided that commissioning a piece in honor and memory of her mother was a way to positively commemorate that tragic event in the best way she knew how: though music. A collaboration between saxophonist Munoz and fellow master’s student and composer Stephanie Ann Boyd, Munoz noted “This is the first piece that I have commissioned and I am so glad that I got to share this collaboration with Stephanie, and I felt that I made the perfect choice asking her to write this piece in memory of my mother”.
This Saturday’s recital, Identity, also features work by Jacob Ter Veldhuis (Jacob TV), Marc Mellits, Marcel Bitsch, and Franz Schubert. Boyd’s Coronam Collis is the finale of the concert, and is a three movement triptych on the actions and emotions surrounding Patricia’s passing. On playing the piece written for her by Boyd, Munoz mused “Playing the melody and hearing lush harmonies throughout the ensemble warms my heart and brings life to a part of my soul that has known darkness for far too long.”
