When asked to comment Shovelin said, “Paying for elder care – nursing home care costs – can deplete resources quickly and drastically reduce your quality of life. Medicaid can help lift this burden off your shoulders by covering most or all of these costs,” she said.

However, Shovelin says that the majority of the population has a couple of misconceptions about qualifying for and receiving Medicaid benefits.

For example, many of her clients often think that they have too many assets to qualify for Medicaid in the first place.

“What many of my clients don’t realize is that they can protect their assets and qualify for Medicaid at the same time. It’s possible to qualify for Medicaid benefits – but only if you plan for it. Contacting an experienced elder law attorney will help you do this,” she said.

Shovelin added that another misconception is that people who are denied Medicaid after applying are not eligible for coverage if they re-apply.

When asked to elaborate, Shovelin said, “A lot of people assume that being rejected for Medicaid is like being denied a bank loan, meaning that they can’t apply again.

However, this is false. There are a number of reasons why a Medicaid application might not be approved, and an experienced elder law attorney can use various strategies, which are legal, to get it approved.

Shovelin added that the most common reasons an application is rejected include too many assets, incorrect or missing paperwork or information, or spouse-related issues.

“By using the strategies provided by a qualified elder law or estate planning lawyer, you can maintain a certain quality of life whilst continuing to live off any converted assets or income, while your family can rest assured that your finances are in order,” she said.
