Well recognised Sweden’s Silviahemmet dementia care methodology is now available for aged care organisations around the world in an e-learning format provided by Swedish Care International. The company is an official partner for international knowledge spread of Sweden’s premier dementia care knowledge center Stiftelsen Silvahemmet.

Silviahemmet was founded by Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden 25 years ago with a goal to develop the philosophy and methodology for an individual living with dementia. Today, the methodology is widely used in care organisations across Europe, Asia and other regions. However, until now, it has not been accessible online. Due to this, many care organisations, carers and individuals have been unable to access the benefits it provides.

The online learning program is based on a person-centred Silviahemmet dementia care philosophy with a palliative care approach. Organisations that are applying it have reported higher quality of care and support for residents, reduced use of medication, curbed the tendency to run away, better control of incontinence, reduced problem of staying asleep, increased communication and strengthened social contacts as well as increased teamwork and reduced turnover. With a sensible concept and common philosophy within an institution everyone can stick to it to ensure the unified methodology and the highest quality of care.

Anderson Simfukwe, Executive Director Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias in Zambia, said:

“The difference between this e-learning program and my previous training on dementia is that information in the programme is structured in a very easy and simple to understand English, coupled with animation that contextualises the course content into reality and full comprehension of the course content.”

The e-learning program is a safe and easy to use method to enhance the knowledge of caregiving teams working in nursing homes, aged care facilities, homecare organisations, geriatric units in hospitals and other healthcare institutions. It is filled with practical advice for daily care situations and challenges related to mealtime, safe and suitable environment, hygiene routines, behavioral changes, sexuality, communication, family members, teamwork, end-of-life and palliative care.

A nurse from Epoch Elder Care, assisted living homes in India said:

“I would like to recommend this e-learning program because it is explained in a simple
language and the information provided has been beautifully given in an attractive
interface.”
