Auckland Dentist Launches Dental Emergency Awareness Campaign
Dental emergencies and injuries can be painful or uncomfortable. Left untreated, oral health is put at risk. A local emergency dentist is on a mission to educate the community of Auckland on how to prevent and deal with emergency dental issues.

According to the Oral Health Foundation, 31% of adults have tooth decay, and 74% of adults have had at least one tooth extracted. Emergency visits to the dentist often happen because of poor oral care, leading to serious toothaches, affecting day to day activities. Even when a patient does maintain great oral hygiene, that is not a guarantee of avoiding an emergency dental visit. Falls or impact from a contact sport can cause a tooth to be chipped or broken. A crown may fall off or a filling becomes loose. Some dental emergencies should be addressed immediately, while others may be able to wait a day or two.
Dr AJ Salman, owner and emergency dentist at Northmed Dental offers this advice to anyone who is experiencing a massive toothache: “If you’re experiencing pain or had some kind of dental trauma, contact a local dentist and let them know what’s going on.” Dr Salman continues, “A trained emergency dentist can provide immediate services to patients who need relief and resolution for their dental problem.”
Dr Salman, further states, “There are three common dental emergencies that should be addressed right away. The first is a knocked out tooth. An emergency dentist can often save a knocked-out tooth but they only have a few hours, so you must act quickly.” Dr Salman advises that you hold the tooth by the crown (the round biting surface), and place it in a container of milk, water, or saliva, then call a dentist right away.
The next dental emergency that should be given immediate attention is severe tooth pain. “A toothache always indicates a problem. It may have been caused by trauma or you woke up one morning with a massive toothache. If it’s severe enough to disrupt your day, you’ll want to get it sorted ASAP. In extreme situations, you may be in danger of losing the tooth without treatment,” states Dr Salman. When asked how quickly a patient can come in for an appointment, Dr Salman replies – “At our emergency dental clinics in Mairangi Bay, we can usually see a patient the same day.”
A lost dental crown or filling is the last of three dental emergencies that should be addressed right away. According to Dr Salman, losing a filling or crown is usually not painful, but recommends seeing a dentist as soon as possible to protect the tooth and preventing any further damage. “If a filling falls out, there isn’t much you can do until you come in for your emergency appointment besides avoid chewing or drinking hot or cold liquids around that area,” explains Dr Salman.
Dental emergencies can be downright painful or just plain uncomfortable. By educating the residents of Auckland on how to deal with a dental emergency, Dr Salman strives to make a difference in the oral health of thousands of local Kiwis.
