Hundreds of potential claimants who have contracted cancer after taking Zantac are still reluctant to come forward and file lawsuits because they often blame themselves for their illness, attorney Joseph Fantini has revealed.

Fantini, the founder of the Zantac Cancer Compensation Program (ZCCP), said more than 10 million people in the U.S. had been taking Zantac before it was pulled from shelves.

The Program represents over thousands of individuals in legal claims, and Fantini believes that could increase massively over the coming months and next few years.

In April 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took the unusual step to recall ranitidine, the generic version of Zantac, over concerns of a potentially high dosage content of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a known carcinogen, in the drug.

Tests revealed Zantac could have 3,000 times more NDMA content than the FDA’s recommended daily dose. NDMA can cause several cancers affecting the prostate, bladder, breast, colon, esophageal, gastric, kidney, liver, pancreatic, and stomach.

“And yet we still find people who are reluctant to sue because they wrongly believe they did something wrong. Rather than Zantac being related to their cancer, they think they were born with it, or there’s a genetic reason,” Fantini said in a conversation on The Five-Minute Legal Insights podcast..

“My message to them is that they did nothing wrong. The Program is here for them, and we have the scientists to prove they did nothing wrong. If anything, it was the manufacturers who failed to do due diligence on the product that is at fault.

“They knew the products could have been dangerous, and rather than warn the public; they put profits above patients. We are here to stand up for patients and fight for justice they deserve.

“But we need their help, that strength in numbers, before anyone else suffers. They should hold the manufacturers accountable for putting a defective product on the market. We want everyone to come together and prevent this from happening again.”

He said a client would be assigned an experienced, highly-trained paralegal that knows about Zantac. Once signed up for the product liability cases, his team will be honed to establish two grounds: proof of usage of medication, and diagnosis and treatment for cancer.

His team sources all the necessary medical documents, and they are passed to experts to evaluate all the medical information. ZCCP has adopted efficient processes and procedures to expedite matters and get a quick decision to a client as to whether they move ahead in litigation.

Fantini commented: “We estimate that potentially one million people have taken Zantac and developed cancer. Currently, there are over 100,000 pending claims, and we want to make sure that people realize they are not alone.

“If we go forward with a case, we will bring it to resolution as fast as we can. Although we cannot do it overnight, we have adapted our procedures over the past years, and they are highly efficient.”

He added: “And for those that are doubting whether to go ahead because we are going to sue their doctors, that’s not the case. We’re going after Zantac’s manufacturers. The doctors are just as outraged as we are and as passionate as we are to get justice for their patients.”
