Every year during the first full week of August is Dental Health Week, a campaign sponsored by the Australian Dental Association (ADA). This year’s ADA campaign highlights the importance of maintaining healthy gums to ensure optimal dental wellness.

As a busy dental practice, TLC Dental encounters many people who are concerned with preserving their teeth and creating a better smile both visually and structurally. But what about those who don’t regularly see a dentist? This is where the Dental Health Week’s annual campaign has the most effect. Utilising social media, as well as other media outlets, the benefits and ease of a visit to the dentist are highlighted encouraging more people to have conversations around maintaining good oral health practices. Dr. Hoffenberg emphasizes pro-active dental care, “During a patient consulation we determine overall gum health and offer the care to avoid problems down the road. A gum disease like gingivitis can be treated with brushing and cleaning between the teeth at home with periodic professional cleanings by a dentist. When gum disease has progressed to Periodontitis treatment by a dentist or periodontist is necessary. If Periodontitis is not treated teeth may ultimately be lost.”

Though Dental Health Week is only one week a year the goal for the ADA is to build awareness and promote the steps to care for your teeth and gums to help you keep your teeth and smile for life on a year round basis.
