Seven Artists Presenting Their Human Rights Themed Art in Celebration of the UN’s International Day of Human Rights Featured at Youth for Human Rights Exhibit

Youth for Human Rights art contest participants will attend in person and show their pieces in art walk open to the public

Youth for Human Rights International’s Washington, DC, chapter will co-host an art exhibition with Art Impact International in honor of International Human Rights Day at the historic Fraser Mansion in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC, as part of ArtWalk Dupont, which is held by area galleries and organizations on the first Friday of every month.

The exhibit celebrates International Human Rights Day and features seven artists who were part of Youth for Human Rights International’s “War or Peace?” art competition. The competition was held in 2022 and was featured in on on-line gallery and book. The seven artists will be at the ArtWalk exhibition in person with selected pieces of their art. 

Artwalk Dupont features art exhibits in galleries, embassies and cultural centers in the historic Dupont Circle area of Washington, DC.

The Church of Scientology National Affairs Office will display several of the “War or Peace?” works, including the thought-provoking work “Diaspora,” by William (Bill) Jones of the United States. His piece visually displays the Confederate Flag and other images on the back of an African American man to evoke centuries of discrimination. The work jarringly brings home the history of segregation and violence against African Americans. The inspiration for “Diaspora” was the Charleston, South Carolina, church shooting on June 17, 2015, when nine African Americans were killed during Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Before entering the Youth for Human Rights “War or Peace?” art contest, all entrants studied the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by viewing short educational videos created by Youth for Human Rights International. The artwork was judged both on its artistic content and the human rights theme.

International Human Rights Day marks the signing of the UDHR which was created in 1948 after the human rights violations of World War II, and is one of the foundational documents of the United Nations. 

Participating artists are Bill Jones, Brenda Chandler, Esther Iverem, Felicia L. Reed, Hubert Jackson, Janie McGee, and Jerome Smith, who will all be available to discuss their work and the human rights which inspired them.

Mr. Azhar Haq, president of Youth for Human Rights International’s DC chapter, said, “Artists can often express concepts such as human rights in an art form which brings these rights more vividly to the beholder. We want to encourage artists to keep working for peace and human rights through their art.”

The art will be displayed, along with other free educational materials pertinent to the human rights theme, during the December 6, 2024 Art Walk. 

Those wishing to attend are welcome at the Fraser Mansion, home of the Church of Scientology National Affairs Office, at 1701 20th St NW, Washington, DC, from 6-8pm.
