Chongqing Hotpot Carnival Opens in Cambodia

Chongqing, China, March 16, 2025 — Phnom Penh – The “Let’s Meet! Cambodia · Shapingba Hotpot Carnival” took place simultaneously on March 14 at Morgan Sky Plaza in Phnom Penh and Ciqikou Ancient Town in Shapingba District, Chongqing.

The event, organized by the People’s Government of Shapingba District, Chongqing, aimed to strengthen China- Cambodia trade and cultural exchanges and deepen the friendship between the two peoples.

At the main venue in Phnom Penh, five well-known hotpot companies from Chongqing brought the unique taste of Chongqing hotpot to the Cambodian people. Meanwhile, at the sub-venue in Shapingba District, Cambodian students in Chongqing and local citizens shared a hotpot feast and enjoyed intangible cultural heritage performances.

This event provided the Cambodian people with an opportunity to experience authentic Chongqing flavors firsthand through hotpot tasting, immerse in the cultural charm of “one pot cooking for all,” and feel the city spirit of Chongqing: resilience, valiance, openness, and pioneering.

At the same time, 27 intangible cultural heritage techniques and time-honored Chinese brands, including Chen Changyin Mahua (fried dough twist) and Shaci Random Stitch Embroidery, were showcased, highlighting the long history of Chinese culture through interactive displays and product exhibitions.

Ly Thuch, Senior Minister of Cambodia, Zhao Haiyan, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia, Neak Oknha Ly Kun Thai, Chairman of the Cambodia Confederation of Investors Association (CCIA), Hu Yi, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Chongqing Shapingba District Committee and Deputy Mayor of the Shapingba District, senior officials from the Cambodian Ministries involving areas like commerce, media, tourism, education, culture and arts, as well as members of the royal family and business leaders, attended the event.

The event officially kicked off at 6 pm at the main venue in Cambodia. Ly Thuch delivered a welcome speech, and Zhao Haiyan also addressed the audience.

At the sub-venue in Ciqikou Ancient Town in Chongqing, Shapingba District promoted its food culture and investment opportunities to the Cambodian audience through a live broadcast.  

Both venues and the people from both countries participated in the hotpot feast celebration through a “cloud live broadcast.”

The sub-venue invited Cambodian students in Chongqing to sample the local delicacies while connecting with their families in Cambodia and with Nos Sles, Secretary of State at the Cambodian Ministry of Education, to share their experiences studying and living in China. This provided a glimpse of Chongqing’s local spirit, vibrant development, and peaceful and harmonious social environment.

The organizer hopes to use Chongqing’s food culture as a link to deepen bilateral economic and trade cooperation, injecting new energy into the construction of international consumption center cities and regional economic growth.

The event will last until March 16. In the future, Shapingba District will continue to promote greater achievements in cooperation with Cambodia in areas such as trade and culture, injecting new vitality into the construction of the Belt and Road.
