Rehab Expert Expresses Concern That Alcohol Abuse is Growing

A new survey just out shows that alcoholism is increasing in the US, and health officials, doctors, and one outspoken rehab expert are concerned.

An eye opening survey just out this week shows that the rate of alcohol abuse has taken a turn for the worst. The study shows that user’s lifetime problems with alcohol has increased from 30 percent to 44 percent, which is causing concern for health officials, doctors, and a prominent rehab expert.

Out of 36,000 adults who took part in the survey, which looked at their drinking habits, only a disappointing 1 in 5 people sought help in an attempt to overcome the issue. What’s more, it seems that even the healthiest among us are succumbing to the perils of alcohol abuse. For instance, one doctor was quoted as saying that he has a patient who exercises on a daily basis and maintains a healthy diet, but has felt tingling and numbness in his feet, which was brought on by high levels of alcohol in his body due to his 4 drink a day habit. Cases like this has been labelled as Alcohol Use Disorder by health officials because those levels of alcohol consumption lead to physical and mental harm.

The rehab expert, who sees all too many cases of Alcohol Use Disorder, sums it up succinctly. “If you drink too much, you need to find a way to cut down. And if you can’t do that, the best thing to do is stop drinking entirely. And if you can’t do that alone, you should get help. The first and most important step to ending alcoholism is to find people who can support you through the process.”

Experts are now worried that the increase in alcohol abuse could lead to more alcohol dependent deaths, which tend to shorten life expectancies by fifteen years or more. Currently in the US, one in every twenty deaths are due to alcohol abuse.

“It is a challenge to remain a non-drinker after quitting alcohol,” says one health official who has extensively studied alcoholism. “Relapse is not a sign of personal failure. Rather, it shows that alcoholism is a lifelong illness. Experts were surprised that the rates of alcohol abuse has increased, but that may be a direct reflection of the fact that some people consider it a short-term problem, when in fact, it’s a lifelong illness.

For now, rehabilitation programs are one of the strongest support networks available to those people who are looking to fight alcohol dependency. But officials say that if the latest figures from the survey are ever going to improve, then health officials, doctors, and rehab facilities have a long and tiresome battle ahead.
