Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region reacts to Ontario’s pilot project that provide funding to patients for self directed home care.

As the senior population continues to rise, hospitals and long term care facilities are struggling to keep up. In response, the Ontario government has stepped in with a project in which funds are given directly to patients to decide their own method of home care. This will free up hospital beds and provide the funds necessary for seniors and other patients to get the care they need. “It’s an interesting project,” says Brian Shevel, President of Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region. “The initiative seems to be addressing some of the present and future concerns surrounding home care in this province and the country overall. It’s obviously too early to comment on the effectiveness, but knowing that practical steps are being taken and not just spoken about is certainly encouraging.”
The Ontario government has also promised a $5 million increase in funding to extend the amount of covered hours home care workers can be in the home. This amounts to 150 hours of visits per month compared to the 120 currently capped right now.
“That is another big move that goes a long way to helping many more seniors afford the actual amount of time they need to receive adequate home care,” Shevel continues. “This doesn’t solve the entire problem, but any step forward to help seniors get the care they need at more affordable rates is a positive one.”
The pilot project may resolve some concerns regarding the province’s home care sector, however, experts believe that better access to healthcare information and dealing with the transition of an aging population are still issues that still need to be addressed.
