James Barbour, host of the talk show James Barbour Now on the Whatever It Takes Network, recently interview Mike Falkow, actor, writer and filmmaker, about his long and illustrious Hollywood career. Mr. Falkow, along with his friend and fellow filmmaker Adam Beason, discussed life in Hollywood and what inspired them to write and produce films. According to Beason, he knew when he was seven years old and saw Star Wars that he wanted to make films. When he was 19, he came to Hollywood and snuck onto sets, paying union members to help him gain access to film studios, just to be around the action of a movie set. After a few months, someone finally gave him a job. He worked his way up from there, doing all sorts of odd jobs in and around sets. Eventually, he wrote a script himself and sold it, moving on to regular screenwriting and production. His most notable works to date are Deceived, Airship Cowboys and Last Man Standing.

Mike Falkow, a former surfer from South Africa, found himself in New York as the result of his competition in both surfing events and a modeling competition. He made his way to where his parents were living in Los Angeles, and found that the southern California surfing scene was a good place for him to work on his technique. He also started acting classes after being on set with a friend who advised him to train as an actor. From there, he began writing as a “cathartic” activity and began to study script structure and format. For a few years, he worked on his scripts and eventually felt confident enough to have others review his work. On working with Beason, Falkow noted, “I think we have written four things together now, and each of them has been a different process.”

The two filmmakers also discussed making movies with iPhones, the transition from film to digital, and field journalism as well as the obstacles inherent in producing any film.
