Tampa, FL, United States – August 18, 2015 /PressCable/ —
In a ground-breaking study published by the University of Toronto, new data reveals that the release of smog-forming chemical compounds found in city grime is triggered by exposure to sunlight. City grime is a mixture of thousands of chemicals — including nitrogen oxides — emitted into the air by vehicles, factories and other sources.
It was previously believed that these molecules become inactive when trapped on surfaces, but this study has proven otherwise. While conducting their research, the study participants found that when city grime comes in contact with sunlight, nitrogen oxide is released. Once released, this chemical combines with other organic compounds in the air to create smog.
When asked about their findings, study author James Donaldson, a University of Toronto chemistry professor, said “The current understanding of urban air pollution does not include the recycling of nitrogen oxides and potentially other compounds from building surfaces. But based on our field studies in a real-world environment, this is happening. We don’t know yet to what extent this is occurring, but it may be quite a significant, and unaccounted for, contributor to air pollution in cities.”
As a growing problem and constant contributor to a number of illnesses, understanding all aspects of pollution and what’s causing it is essential for finally getting it under control. In a statement released by Reishi Force, spokesperson Hallie Richman said, “Developments like these will continue to clue us in on what can be done differently to prevent further damage to our living space. Though we still don’t know the extent of damage caused by city grime, we know it’s doing something and that we may have a way to put an end to it. We think that’s as good a start as any.”
Reishi Force stands by these ideas, and reminds the community that these pollutants don’t just harm the environment; they also harm the people living in it.
