Treatment Experts Clarify Why Obtaining Help in Order to Recover from Addiction Is Necessary
As the disease progresses, it becomes clear that the impacts of addiction will not be isolated to just the addict.
When there is a friend or loved one who is caught in the spiral of addiction, it’s difficult to watch. There seems to be no end to the bad decisions, lack of good judgment, and self-harm that said loved one can pull down upon themselves. Impulsive financial decisions an addict makes can lead to familial poverty, troubling even the youngest and most unaware kids in a family. Draining financial resources is only a tiny aspect of the devastation that addiction can bring. As an addict’s behavior becomes increasingly focused on feeding the addiction, the resulting broken promises, missed family commitments and manipulation create distrust, pushing the addict away and increasing a sense of isolation, anxiety, depression and fear.
While looking for a treatment program, loved ones should seek one that includes them and the family as part of the healing process. If considering a residential treatment facility, as many recommend, the recovering addict will probably be kept away from family and friends during the initial detoxification process. This can last anywhere from a few days to a week, depending on the medical health issues that present during evaluation.
However, once the client’s physical health has stabilized and therapy has begun, a licensed and caring treatment program will always seek to involve loved ones and family members. After all, the ability to rebuild loving relationships creates a stable foundation for the addict to stand on when they re-enter normal life. An understanding of the addiction cycle and the ability to provide care for the patient is invaluable. In fact, through the educational aspects of a great, highly qualified treatment program, the family and friends may be able to recognize triggers, detect signs of relapse, and in general serve as an outside resource to their loved one’s treatment team.
A world-class addiction treatment program will involve every aspect of the client’s life. Evaluating and treating physical and medical issues is primary, and the detoxification process is part of this. Treating a client’s emotional, spiritual, and mental state is equally important, and can be a great resource to prevent relapse.
