Aircraft Value Expert Releases New Book for Owners Concerned About Preserving Value

November 13, 2015 – – Las Vegas, November 15, 2015 – In 35 years of working with companies and clients that own aircraft, author Larry Hinebaugh has witnessed firsthand the financial ramifications to the aircraft owner when aircraft record information went missing.

The book, Aircraft Logbooks, A Plane Owner’s Guide, is intended as a high-level overview of how logbooks affect resale value, with several real-life case studies of what happens when things go wrong.

In the current economy, most aircraft owners are concerned with resale value. Few of them realize that up to 30% of the resale value of their aircraft depends on the condition and completeness of the paper logbooks. And many aircraft owners are surprised to learn that the electronic maintenance records kept by various service providers often do not provide a complete solution.

Among others, the book includes a story of a flight crew that left the paper logbook in the trunk of a rental car, a Gulfstream 650 based in Hong Kong that was returned to the leasing company with its logbook missing, and a lost form 8130 that cost the aircraft owner $30,000 for a nose wheel steering unit that he could not prove had been replaced.

In a particularly ironic incident, a VIP 727 that was undergoing maintenance jumped the chocks, impaled itself into a hangar, and broke a fire suppression pipe. The hangar happened to be where the logbooks were neatly laid out to record the maintenance being performed. The damage to the logbooks proved more costly than the damage to the aircraft itself.
