Xarelto Lawsuit Bellwether Trial Updates
November 16, 2015 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on the latest news concerning Xarelto lawsuit bellwether trials. These trials are being overseen by United States District Judge Eldon Fallon. A recent order additionally states that bellwether trial cases will be selected in January of 2016 from a group of 40 filed suits. The selections will be made based on which seem most ready for trial. It has been announced that the first 2 of 4 bellwether trials will take place in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana on February 6th, 2017, and March 13th, 2017. The third Xarelto bellwether trial is set to be heard in Mississippi on April 24th,2017, while the fourth and final bellwether trial will be heard in Texas on May 30th,2017.
On a federal level, Xarelto lawsuits currently make up over 1,700 filed cases. Complaints are filed against defendants Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson). They were formed into multidistrict litigation number 2592, and all contain similar allegations that the blood thinning drug caused uncontrollable bleeding events. Many plaintiffs call Xarelto the most dangerous blood thinner on the market, due to the fact that it was developed and sold without a corresponding antidote.
Because the drug has no antidote, if someone taking it is injured and bleeds, there is nothing physicians can do to reverse the effects of the drug and get that person’s blood to clot. In these instances, they have to resort to life-saving measures to keep the person alive. With traditional blood thinners, however, these risks are not as severe. When someone taking a traditional blood thinner is injured and bleeds, physicians can administer vitamin K. Unlike Xarelto, traditional blood thinners respond to vitamin K, which counters their effects and allows blood to clot, thus preventing uncontrollable bleeding episodes, and even bleed outs.
Because of these dangers, many have stepped up to file suit against the drug. Xarelto is the subject of over 2,000 lawsuits: more than 1,700 which have been federally filed and consolidated to form the MDL, and more than 300 which are part of a mass tort in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is fully expected that as these cases await trial, others will continue to be filed.
