Physician Couple Warns Against Power Morcellation On Uterine Fibroids

November 30, 2015 – – Tracey & Fox reports on details of a married couple from Boston, both physicians, who are spearheading the campaign against power morcellation during gynecological surgeries on uterine fibroids. The couple has been campaigning to spread the word about the alleged dangers of power morcellation for over two years now. They have very personal experience connecting them to the matter, as Dr. Amy Reed, the wife of Dr. Hooman Noorchashm, is battling cancer herself after undergoing a routine gynecological surgery involving a power morcellator device.

Dr. Reed was experiencing pelvic pain from uterine fibroids which had developed, and went to a Boston hospital to have them removed via hysterectomy with a power morcellator. The power morcellator option was selected initially to avoid a large incision and open surgery which could require a lengthy recovery time. The power morcellator device can enter the abdomen through a tiny incision much less invasively. Once inside, the tool has small blades which whip around to shred uterine fibroid tissue. Today, however, Dr. Reed and many others allege that as the tool does this, it also exposes and spreads previously undetected cancer cells, and upstages the cancer by enabling it to travel throughout the body.

Just a short time after her hysterectomy, Dr. Reed and her husband were informed that one of the fibroids she had removed had been found to contain leiomyosarcoma, an especially aggressive form of uterine cancer. They state that the morcellator suddenly spread these leiomyosarcoma cells throughout her body, significantly worsening her prognosis and upstaging her cancer.

After struggling to deal with this news on their own, the couple decided to become as active as they could in trying to prevent others from suffering the same fate. Dr. Noorchashm quickly began an campaign against power morcellator manufacturers. He reached out to many government agencies, including the FBI, and even threatened to leave his practice if they would not stop using power morcellator devices. When she was able, Dr. Reed also joined his campaign.

In 2014, the FDA issued a safety warning estimating that around 1 out of every 350 women who undergo hysterectomies or myomectomies with a power morcellator are at risk of uncovering and spreading previously hidden uterine cancer cells. They warned that because of this, most women should refrain from undergoing power morcellation on uterine fibroids, where the cancer cells can be encapsulated and hidden.
