Ohming Technology, (www.Ohming.com), a company focused on developing products that make it more convenient to charge multiple devices simultaneously, is weighing in on the increase in smartphone and tablet usage for entertainment purposes.

A recent study conducted by Nielsen and presented to the Associated Press showed a decline in TV viewing among American Millennials. The study found that 8.5 million people per minute now use smartphones and other mobile devices like a television to stream their entertainment or play games. Over the same periods, the percentage of American Millennials using television, radio, and desktop computers dropped by eight percent. “This is just the natural progression of technology beginning to show itself more clearly,” says Paul Romanenko, Owner and CEO of Ohming Technology. “People want control, and this is especially true for Millennials, who are all about doing things their way. Streaming videos on the Internet or with services like Netflix allows them to watch pretty much whatever they want, whenever they want. It’s almost a no brainer.”

Overall television viewership among Millennials has fallen 10% to just 8.4 million people per minute. Nielsen’s Senior Vice President has acknowledged that the increased use of mobile devices is likely having an impact on TV viewing.

The hourly viewing time on smartphones and tablets by Millennials also increased by over 30 minutes; they are now watching close to three hours and 45 minutes over these mobile devices. Overall television viewership peaked in 2009–2010, when it was up to eight hours and 55 minutes each day. That number now sits at five hours and 43 minutes for Millennials and just over eight hours overall.

“This news is actually very exciting,” Romanenko concludes. “However, it’s also important to note that more smartphone usage means a larger drain on their batteries and a greater need to keep these devices charged.”
