Louisiana Xarelto Lawsuit Alleges Blood Thinner Caused Nearly Fatal GI Bleeding
January 07, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on another lawsuit recently filed by New Jersey resident who alleges that Xarelto manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to adequately warn consumers about the serious health risks and dangerous side effects associated with their blood thinner. The lawsuit was filed under case number 2:15-cv-06264 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The filing took place on November 23rd of 2015.
Lawsuits federally filed against the drug, which plaintiffs now claim number over 2,800, have been consolidated to form a multidistrict litigation in Louisiana. These cases will be overseen by Judge Eldon Fallon and involve defendants Janssen and Bayer AG. Additionally, another mass tort group of over 500 cases has been formed in Philadelphia, PA. All plaintiffs involved share synonymous allegations that the anticoagulant can cause serious uncontrollable bleeding episodes, and that manufacturers were severely negligent in choosing to release it to the market without any corresponding antidote.
This dangerous lack of antidote means that if someone who has taken Xarelto becomes injured and bleeds, physicians will not be able to clot their blood and prevent them from losing too much of it. In these situations, it is required that physicians resort to extreme, life-saving measures such as blood transfusions. Additionally, when patients have internal poolings of blood that build up pressure, doctors must perform surgery. These situations can easily become fatal.
Patients taking traditional blood thinners, such as warfarin, do not encounter the same issue, as traditional blood thinners have an available antidote through vitamin K. Patients taking traditional blood thinners who become injured and bleed are treated with vitamin K which reverses the effects of the blood thinner and allows their blood to clot. This seemingly small difference can be a life saving one.
The man who filed this complaint alleged that after just six months of using Xarelto, he suffered from a life-threatening gastrointestinal bleed. Due to this episode, the man alleges that he suffered severe and lasting injuries. His case is similar to many others currently involved in the Xarelto MDL. Plaintiffs in all cases share similar stories, though some have reported deaths.
