“Constitution Translated for Kids” Helps Americans Understand Rights, Government

“Constitution Translated for Kids” by Cathy Travis – an award winning book about the U.S. Constitution – teaches kids and adults what the Constitution really says. Teachers and families regularly hail the book as the best resource available to simplify the Constitution.

In the run up to the coming U.S. Presidential election, the Constitution is getting quite a workout, with angry disagreement about what various clauses and rights contained in the Constitution really mean.

Constitution Translated for Kids” by Cathy Travis – winner of the 2011 Gelett Burgess Children’s Book Award for Education (Government and Politics), the “Mom’s Choice Award” (juvenile non-fiction, 2010) and a “Best Books Award” (2009) – is a simple, widely acclaimed, non-ideological translation of the entire U.S. Constitution, side-by-side with the original 1787 text.

The need for such a resource – for kids and adults – is enormous. Study after study regularly finds Americans are proud of their rights, but rarely understand the essence of their democracy. Very few people have read the Constitution in its entirety, and many people get their information about what is in the Constitution from television or from politicians they tend to agree with.

“The ideas and concepts of the Constitution are elegantly simple,” said Travis. “But it’s written in the language of statesmen and diplomats. That makes even simple things hard to understand. Add to that, people don’t trust sources anymore; we’ve been lied to and misled about the government. So I made the Constitution itself the source for this book.”

“That’s what inspired the side-by-side rendering in my book,” Travis continued. “By including every single word of the Constitution, alongside a simple translation of what that means, now anybody can know precisely what the Constitution says. Even if they think my translation is not right, they have the exact language of the Constitution right there in front of them so they can decide for themselves.”

Travis, a former Capitol Hill communications director and strategist, hopes Americans of all ages will understand the rights guaranteed to every citizen, and the foundation of a government of the people. “The Constitution is our only national birthright, so all Americans should understand our founding document,” says Travis. “Democracy only works when the governed know how their government works.”

Published first in 2006, and updated as Supreme Court decisions alter the national journey, “Constitution Translated for Kids” has been the go-to resource for families and schools.
