A Bold Partnership to Combat Drug Abuse in Orange Farm
A powerful alliance has been forged to tackle the devastating impact of drugs on youth in Orange Farm.
Gauteng, South Africa, February 12, 2025 — A powerful alliance has been forged to tackle the devastating impact of drugs on youth in Orange Farm. Last week, representatives from the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, including Ifat Segev from Israel and Thokozani Maringa, met with the Orange Farm Crime Prevention Youth Desk to launch a collaborative drug education and prevention initiative.
With an alarming 80% unemployment rate, Orange Farm is experiencing a severe drug crisis, affecting children as young as eight. The average age of first drug experimentation is a shocking 12 years old, leading to high school dropouts and a lack of constructive activities for young people. “Our community is suffering,” stated a member of the Orange Farm Crime Prevention Youth Desk. “There is nothing for children to do… so many of them get involved in drugs and gangs from a young age”. “Substances like alcohol, marijuana, crystal meth, and heroin fuel a range of societal issues, including gender-based violence, early pregnancy, school dropout, rape, and crime, “he concluded.
To address this crisis, the Drug-Free World team introduced its “Truth About Drugs Campaign,” a global drug education program that provides factual materials such as booklets, public service announcements, and documentaries aimed at informing young people and adults about the dangers of drug abuse.
As a result of this meeting, the Orange Farm Crime Prevention Youth Desk and Drug-Free World formalized their partnership, committing to roll out the “Truth About Drugs Campaign” throughout the community. Drug-Free World will provide training and support to the Youth Desk, enabling them to deliver the program in schools and the wider community. The initiative includes equipping teachers with Drug-Free World curriculum materials and empowering Youth Desk members to conduct drug education lectures, organize activities, and run competitions to engage local youth constructively.
This partnership signals a turning point for Orange Farm. By equipping the community with knowledge, the “Truth About Drugs Campaign” aims to steer youth away from substance abuse and towards a brighter future. The program will commence as soon as the Orange Farm Crime Prevention Youth Desk completes its training.
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is an international non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education. The organization provides a range of resources, including the “Truth About Drugs” curriculum, which delivers factual information on the dangers of illicit substances and alcohol, empowering individuals to make informed choices. Drug-Free World is supported by the Church of Scientology and its members and based on the principles of L. Ron Hubbard, who studied the damage that drugs cause not only for an individual but also his family and community.
The Orange Farm Crime Prevention Youth Desk, a community-driven initiative working to reduce crime and social challenges affecting young people in Orange Farm. Tired of seeing young adults destroy themselves with drugs, the organization committed itself to fostering a safer and more positive environment for youth through crime prevention programs, educational workshops, and support services.
