A global campaign to defend the rights of Iranian women to enter stadiums in Iran

A virtual global storm, created by several groups of human rights defenders, is underway to endow Iranian women their inalienable right to “cheer” for their home team at sports stadiums across Iran. Iranian people are cooperating together, inside Iran and across the globe, to gain their basic human rights from the Islamic Republic regime in Iran, for women to attend sporting events along the side their male family and friends.

On Saturday April 11, and Sunday April 12, 2015, many known Iranian and non-Iranian woman rights NGO groups standing for gender equality, scholars, lawyers, and ordinary people, have come together and have launched an unprecedented virtual campaign to pressure Islamic Republic regime in Iran to observe the basic right of its female citizens to enter stadiums in Iran.

“As the Islamic Republic’s ‘nuclear’ grand standing with the international community continues, human rights groups find this momentous. We think that such world media attention can help shed light on Islamic Republic regime’s deplorable human rights records and systematic suppression of women’s rights,” says Mr. Farahmand Kalayeh, a human rights activist and one of the founding members of the “The New Iran”, an NGO seeking peaceful transition of Iran to a secular democracy and gender equality.

Furthermore, Mr. Afshin Jam, an independent human rights and environmental activist, and Ms. Roxanne Ganji, a member of the Iranian Constitutional Monarchy of Iran and one of the key organizers of this global protest, say that they expect hundreds of Iranian patriots and women’s right defenders to gather at 2:00 pm on Saturday April 11th and Sunday April 12th, at The Great Western Forum parking lot in Los Angeles (3900 West Manchester Blvd. Inglewood, CA 90305) where the wrestling world championship between Iran and USA is scheduled to kick off this Saturday.

“Not only will we be voicing our discontent and protesting Islamic Republic regime’s policy of banning Iranian women from sports stadiums in Iran, but also we will be appealing to the world community at large, to NGOs and all media outlets, to cover the grave and systematic human rights abuses in Iran in general,” says Ms. Roxanne Ganji. “These activists are asking those of us in the free world, to pay special attention to the plight of Iranian women as they are in need of our relentless support.”

Among other human rights violations committed by Islamic Republic regime in Iran, are the basic human rights violation against women, of the freedom to participate in the cultural life of the community (Article 27), the basic right to life and liberty (Article 3), the basic right of entitlement to equal protection against any discrimination or any incidents thereof (Article 7), and women are therefore victims of violations with acts aimed at the destruction of basic human rights and freedoms (Article 30) set forth by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, where recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.
