A New Surge Of Avelox Lawsuits Has Emerged

April 11, 2017 – – A new surge of lawsuits regarding the popular antibiotic Avelox has been observed around the nation. Bayer Healthcare, the manufacturers of Avelox and Cipro, joins Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceutical, manufacturers of Levaquin, in the claims.

“The FDA has ordered a strong warning placed on these medications,” says a spokesperson for a consumer information website focused on Avelox and Levaquin lawsuits. “The warnings were ordered due to an increase in the number of patients who were seriously adversely affected by taking the medications.”

The FDA found evidence that these medications, all part of the fluoroquinolone drug class, can cause serious, sometimes life threatening side effects. These effects include hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, muscle weakness, tendinitis, and various others.

Most Avelox lawsuits allege that the drug caused permanent peripheral neuropathy. This is a condition that is a direct result of damage to the peripheral nerves. It can cause weakness and numbness in the hands and feet, as well as severe pain and can affect other areas of the body.

The spokesperson for the website says, “The cases all allege that the pharmaceutical companies knew of these severe risks yet they marketed and sold those medications anyway. There are currently thousands of cases heading into court and more and more are being filed every day.”

The majority of the lawsuits filed against the companies involving fluoroquinolones are focused in Missouri, yet many are being filed in additional state courts around the nation with some claims being filed in Canada as well. Plaintiffs in these cases all state that the companies knew of the dangers of their drugs, having scientific research to back up those claims, yet they continued to downplay the symptoms as minor. Even after the FDA issued a warning to list these serious side effects, patients taking the medications state that the warnings regarding the high risk of developing peripheral neuropathy remain confusing and do not accurately inform the consumer of the true nature of the risk of developing this disease.

The majority of cases regarding fluoroquinolones have been focused on Janssen Pharmaceutical and Johnson & Johnson for Levaquin, although a large number of plaintiffs have now come forth with claims regarding Avelox as well.
