Action Physiotherapy (www.ActionPhysiotherapy.com), a leading provider of effective physiotherapy serving the Brampton area for over 20 years, is weighing in on the importance of preventing common injuries that occur during running and jogging during the fall.
With the number of upcoming marathons and running fundraisers in this fall season, it is important for runners to avoid some of the common injuries associated with running. In fact, studies have shown that up to 70% of runners that take part in these events are sidelined by injuries. (“Runners of All Types Prone to Injuries,” American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation web site, October 21, 2015; https://www.aapmr.org/patients/conditions/msk/Pages/runfact.aspx).
“Injury prevention should be a part of every runner’s training routine,” says Robert Kappes, M.Sc (PT), Registered Physiotherapist at Action Physiotherapy. “Running injuries are very common, as there are a wide range of factors that can contribute to them. It’s especially important considering that a serious injury could prevent someone from ever running again.”
Injury prevention can include a variety of different measures and a multifaceted approach is a runner’s best bet. Runners should be working on their strength, form, and stride for the best protection, as well as consider their choice in footwear.
Further, muscular strength is important for form and stride, as a deficiency in one muscle can result in an uneven gait, which can cause extra impact on the feet, ankles, and legs. Improper form can also lead to injuries such as chronic back pain, rolled ankles, or strained muscles.
“It’s not uncommon for runners to have certain muscles that are weak or neglected,” Kappes adds. “Runners often focus on their cardiovascular health but neglect the importance of muscular strength. Correcting muscle imbalances can help lower the risk of developing an injury.”
Another common cause of running injuries is stiff, tight, or knotted muscles. Stiff muscles are more easily injured and increasing muscle mobility can help prevent these injuries from developing. Foam rolling and self massage techniques are effective at loosening muscles.
Proper posture when running is also important, as poor form can end up contributing to debilitating chronic back pain and other injuries that require rehabilitation and physiotherapy for healing. A common running error is having a stride that is too long. To improve their stride runners should aim to be as close to 90 strides per minute. This will decrease the force on their joints and allow for a more efficient stride.
“While many runners opt for fancy running shoes or other equipment, it’s really these easy techniques which can keep a runner safe,” Kappes concludes. “Injury prevention can be really simple, just taking the time to go through some exercises and improve form will likely have a bigger impact than anything else.”
