Alexander Advertising Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary In The Advertising Industry

Award-winning Oxfordshire-based advertising company, Alexander Advertising celebrates fifty years in the industry. Initially a print media-focused company, it has evolved through five decades to provide more services fit for the digital age, while still retaining its original ethos of cost-effectiveness and client satisfaction.

Providing advertising services since 1968, Alexander Advertising is celebrating its fiftieth year in the industry. Situated in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, it stands as one of the UK’s oldest independent agencies, providing the same expertise in new formats to fit the new landscape of advertising.

From humble beginnings
Alexander Advertising International Limited’s journey began in 1968, headed at the time by the late Byron Alexander. It began with a primary focus on traditional print-based advertising, in particular building close links with the education sector, a tradition the company carries on to this day. Their cost-effective advertising found success not only amongst educational clients but local authorities and charities, too, supplementing their commercial advertising services.

Through troubled times
Over the 50 years in service, Alexander Advertising has seen troubling financial times, as well as shifts that threatened to not only make them obsolete but disrupted the entire industry. It survived and continued to grow through 4 recessions, but the greatest challenge was the shift away from print-based advertising. From 2005-2013, print advertising decreased by 50%, and publications that were once prime targets for ads started to diminish in number, all a result of the advent of the internet and digital media.

The company continued to evolve with the times. Alexander Advertising grew further, buying a graphic design company so that they could offer their services in-house. This allowed the firm to pass even more savings to clients on what had previously been an expensive outsourced service.

The next generation
It was Byron’s son, James Alexander, who took the reins of the company as Director in 2007. After his father’s retirement, he continued to carry on the family ethos of providing professional yet budget-friendly advertising services that would continue to benefit the public sector clients that had been the firm’s mainstay. Under his leadership, the team incorporated a host of new services to reshape Alexander Advertising to fit the modern age.

Amongst the new options that have since been introduced are copywriting and social media, to help AAI deliver its expertise across a whole new range of platforms. New corporate branding and identity consulting allowed the team to use their decades of experience to help clients shape not just their advertising, but the message and image at the core of it. Alexander Advertising has continued to establish its presence in a new marketing world, building a network of specialist partners that help them deliver an even broader range of services.

Setting the industry standard
The core of AAI remains unchanged, carrying the same exceptionally high standards of quality and delivery with a focus on efficiency, effectiveness for the benefit of the client. Thanks to this family ethos, it has won a “Best In Advertising” award from The Drum RAR Awards, alongside seven other nominations.
