American Innovation- Simplicity Sofas Builds Loyal Customers With Great Service

High Point, United States – April 14, 2017 /PressCable/

In 2015 a study was released projecting future growth for the multi-billion dollar RTA (Ready to Assemble) furniture category. A dozen leading companies were cited, including IKEA, Walmart and … Simplicity Sofas, a North Carolina manufacturer and e-commerce retailer with annual sales of $1 million.

Anyone who has never heard of Simplicity Sofas is not alone. The company specializes in a furniture sub-category which does not officially exist – high quality large and small sofas, sleepers, sectionals and recliners that ship unassembled.

What differentiates Simplicity Sofas from other RTA furniture companies like IKEA is the quality, variety and cost of its custom-built furniture, featuring hundreds of different variations ranging in price from $1299 – $8000+.

As actor/ author William Shatner commented in a 2013 interview with Simplicity Sofas owner Jeff Frank, “Simplicity Sofas boldly goes where no furniture has gone before.”

Simplicity Sofas opened its High Point, North Carolina factory in 2007, just as the Recession took hold. Selling direct to consumers exclusively, the company was virtually invisible to the rest of the furniture industry.

That changed with a phone call from the editor-in-chief of Furniture Today, the industry’s primary trade publication. His first question to Simplicity Sofas owner Jeff Frank: “Who the heck are you guys?”

The editor-in-chief’s question resulted from a press release that had come across his desk announcing Simplicity Sofas had just been awarded a $20,000 Grand Prize in a nationwide competition for Most Innovative American Small Business.

There were many reasons why no other RTA furniture companies had ever attempted to manufacture high end Ready to Assemble furniture.

The most basic explanation was that the entire purpose behind RTA furniture was to lower the cost of mass producing and shipping huge numbers of identical low priced items.

Customer assembly of RTA furniture was considered a strong negative factor that people put up with only because of the cost savings. The obvious conclusion was that if there was no cost savings people would not purchase furniture that had to be assembled.

Simplicity Sofas approached RTA design from a completely different angle. This type of furniture could solve a very common and well-known problem that affected millions of people of all income levels –older homes and apartments often had narrow doors or stairways that conventional furniture could not fit through.

One of the first problems encountered by the company’s designers was the realization that the cost of making high quality self-assembly furniture was significantly higher than for similar quality conventional products.

This was overcome by creating an e-commerce website and selling direct to consumers. Bypassing retailers allowed the company to provide great value while simultaneously earning a higher than normal profit margin.

The assembly process was made simple, quick and fun. All Simplicity Sofas furniture is designed to be assembled in 15 minutes or less. No tools are needed. There is a single page of instructions.

The website has multiple videos of small children assembling Simplicity Sofas furniture in less than 5 minutes.

The next obstacle to overcome was customer fears about purchasing expensive furniture that they could not see or try out. The company launched a Word of Mouth marketing campaign supported by an “extreme” customer service philosophy.

By consistently exceeding customer expectations the company was able to generate fiercely loyal and enthusiastic fans determined to see the company succeed.

These supporters spread the word to everyone they knew. They also volunteered their homes as “virtual” showrooms where the furniture could be demonstrated.

By its third year Simplicity Sofas had created a nationwide network of volunteers eager to show off the company’s furniture in their homes.

More than 50% of people who see and sit on Simplicity Sofas furniture in another customer’s home eventually make a purchase.

The Associated Press observed one of these meetings and wrote a story about this unusual marketing practice.

Simplicity Sofas is ranked #1 on the ConsumerAffairs.com website which lists thousands of customer reviews for 65 major furniture retailers.
