Amid Increasing Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Numbers, Doctors Say Removal May Not Help
April 04, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent article indicating that the removal of transvaginal mesh after complications may not fix problems. According to an article by Dr. John Fischer, a review of women who underwent surgery to remove transvaginal mesh revealed that 51 percent still had painful symptoms after the surgery. The article also indicated that, “women with the best results after excision surgery were those who complained of the intrusion of the mesh device through the vaginal wall.”
According to the FDA, in 2010, approximately 300,000 women in the U.S. went through surgery to repair pelvic organ prolapse. An additional 260,000 had a surgical procedure done to treat stress urinary incontinence. One in three pelvic organ prolapse surgeries used mesh, according to the FDA, and 80 percent of procedures are done for stress urinary incontinence were done with mesh.
Adverse side effects of transvaginal mesh have become an increasing problem for women in the United States. Many women have claimed that use of the device, usually made from non-absorbable synthetic polypropylene, causes serious side effects including erosion of mesh through the vagina, bleeding, infection, organ perforation, severe pelvic or vaginal pain, inability to engage in sexual intercourse, vaginal shrinkage, recurrent incontinence or prolapse and neuro-muscular problems.
Manufacturers of the device including C.R. Bard, Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific and Coloplast Corp are facing thousands of lawsuits from women who claim to have suffered serious effects and allege that the companies did not adequately warn consumers about its dangers.
As more cases are expected to be brought to court, attorneys at Banville Law are working to make sure that those who believe they have suffered adverse side effects as a result of a transvaginal mesh implant are given the important opportunity to explore their legal rights fully. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to legal action and financial compensation. Banville Law is currently offering free case evaluations for those parties.
