An Overview Of Adverse Events Prompting IVC Filter Lawsuit Filings

June 13, 2016 – – TheProductLaywers.com reports on adverse side effects that have been reported by patients concerning IVC filters. The FDA has reported that between 2005 and 2010, 921 adverse events related to IVC filters have been submitted through the FDA’s system. Of those incidents, the reports state that 328 involved device migration, 146 involved embolizations, 70 involved perforations and 56 involved filter fracture. The FDA has also noted that many of these complications may be related to the amount of time an IVC filter is allowed to remain in place.

The devices are designed to “catch” blood clots before they reach the pulmonary artery. The small conical nets capture passing blood clots and stop them from reaching the vessels they could block.

A number of patients who have claimed to suffer from complications have filed legal claims against manufacturers for poor design, manufacturing and failing to warn of risks. Lawsuits against Bard were first filed in 2012 in California and Pennsylvania state courts and were combined into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) Panel in the U.S. District Court of Arizona in 2015. Those cases against Cook Medical have been combined to an MDL in the Southern District of Indiana.
