An Overview Of IVC Filter Lawsuit Information And Concerning Plaintiff Arguments

April 18, 2016 – – TheProductLaywers.com reports on details surrounding IVC filter lawsuits, which appear to be mounting after concerning information continues to emerge from plaintiff allegations and an NBC News report. IVC filters are small, cage-like devices which are implanted into patients who are unable to use traditional blood-thinning medications, but who are deemed at increased risk for blood clots. The filters are surgically implanted into patients’ inferior vena cava veins, and work to trap potential blood clots which could be traveling from the lower body toward the heart and lungs. By blocking the clots from traveling toward the lungs, the filters are intended to reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism.

IVC filters were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1979, and have been used with increasing frequency since then. In 1979, the devices were reportedly implanted into just 2,000 patients, while in 2007, for comparison, almost 167,000 IVC filter devices had been implanted.

A recent public safety communication issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as concerning medical research, has appeared to link the filters to several potential health risks, including life-threatening problems. Although the devices are intended to be removed from patients as soon as they are no longer at risk for blood clots, plaintiffs have reported that the devices can actually fracture inside of the body, and that the pieces can travel, potentially puncturing veins and organs, or becoming lodged in intestines and other risky areas, where the may be unable to be removed. This could potentially cause significant health complications.

These patients have filed IVC filter lawsuits against various manufacturers of the devices, claiming that the products are defectively and dangerously designed. Many currently await trial dates, as the products fuel more news and become a topic of increasing controversy.
