An Overview Of Side Effects Alleged By Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Plaintiffs
April 04, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on commonly alleged side effects involving the use of transvaginal mesh. The device is used to treat incontinence and organ prolapse in women and is inserted through incisions made in the vaginal wall. The mesh is used to reinforce the vaginal wall and support bulging organs. The mesh can also be used for stress urinary incontinence by acting as a sling for support to the urethra.
The product was approved by the FDA in 1996 for stress urinary incontinence procedures and in 2002 for pelvic organ prolapse procedures. The product has been the subject of lawsuits due to its alleged side effects. So far, the FDA has received over 3,500 reports of injury, death and malfunction after mesh procedures were done. Those side effects include erosion through the vagina, organ perforation, need for revision surgery, infection, bleeding, severe pelvic or vaginal pain, painful intercourse or an inability to engage in sexual intercourse, recurring prolapse or incontinence, neuro-muscular problems, vaginal scarring, mesh contraction and vaginal shrinking.
In 2008, the FDA stated that nine manufacturers had been mentioned in reports of mesh complications. Those manufacturers include C.R. Bard, American Medical Systems, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, Ethicon, Coloplast Corp and Cook Medical. The FDA issued warnings about the product in October 2008 and July 2011. Multidistrict litigation panels have been assigned to each manufacturer for cases relating to alleged complications from the use of transvaginal mesh.
As these cases are expected to accumulate, lawyers at Banville Law are working to ensure that those individuals who have been treated with transvaginal mesh are able to explore their legal rights fully. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to legal action and substantial financial compensation. The firm is currently offering free case evaluations for interested parties.
