AndroGel Lawsuits Warn Of Heart Attack And Stroke Risks
October 15, 2015 – – Banville Law reports on AndroGel side effects alleged by plaintiffs in current litigation. AndroGel is a testosterone replacement gel which patients apply daily. It is designed to help bring testosterone levels in men back to “normal”. The product was FDA approved to treat men who have significantly lowered levels of testosterone due to specific medical conditions such as hypogonadism.
The FDA recently announced that drug companies who sell AndroGel or other similar testosterone treatments will be required to adequately warn potential consumers of the drug’s side effects, which several studies have noted are increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
In a 2014 peer-reviewed open access scientific journal study, it was found that testosterone use in men over age 65 doubled their risk of heart attacks. A JAMA Internal Medicine study in 2013 additionally found that only half of the men actually using testosterone prescriptions were diagnosed with hypogonadism. It was noted that more than 25% of the men had not even had their testosterone levels tested before beginning treatment.
It has been alleged that drug manufacturers marketed their treatments to consumers, urging the men to ask their doctors about testosterone treatments if they were experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, which had been cited as: mood swings, fatigue, loss of sex drive and energy, or weight gain, among other things.
As men naturally age, the testosterone levels in their bodies decrease. This is a normal occurrence, and can cause many of the symptoms listed above. Plaintiffs claim that AndroGel and other low t drug manufacturers created a condition they called “low T” to increase their product sales and therefore their profits.
Common plaintiff complaints include allegations that using the drug has caused heart problems, blood clots, strokes, and even death in men. Victims also allege that testosterone drug manufacturers purposefully neglected to provide proper side effect warnings on their products.
Currently, there are over 2,000 low t lawsuits. Bellwether trials for these cases are scheduled to begin next year. The initial trials will focus on AndroGel and manufacturer AbbVie.
Those who have suffered health complications after using AndroGel or a similar testosterone treatment may be entitled to join the current litigation, and possibly seek compensation for their suffering.
