As a spokesperson noted, while many people learned some basic facts about the Maya in school, few know that they also invented the rubber ball and the world’s first competitive team ball sport that used vertical stone scoring rings.

Zitter, who learned about the Maya culture many years ago when he first traveled through southern Mexico visiting ancient ballcourts, is now determined to help construct, staff, play and film the first competitive ancient Maya-style ballcourt built anywhere in the modern era.

“Heroes of the Maya: The Rising of Royal Ringball will start with the creation and documenting of the modern revival of the world’s 3,600-year old original ballsport,” the spokesperson said, adding that this new game will then take its place as the second act of a live, spectacular arena-scale family show portraying ancient themes of youthful skill and courage, caring for the natural world, and the role of spirituality in peoples’ lives and destinies.

“The Rising of Royal Ringball will present in the context of that story a modern revival derived from the ancient competitive Maya ballgame that presaged today’s basketball, soccer and volleyball by almost 4,000 years. In essence, truly a whole new ballgame.”

In order to help pay for the construction of the Royal Ringball arena and bring the ancient sport back to modern-day audiences, Zitter recently launched a fundraiser on Kickstarter. There, he hopes to raise $995,000 through crowdfunding and introduce the Phase 1 edition of the game to people of all ages.
