Are Manufacturers’ Websites Stuck in the Last Century? A New Study Investigates.

Are today’s manufacturing firm websites set up for lead generation success? Or are they simply stuck in the past? Precision Marketing Group answers these questions in a new comprehensive study focused on industrial sector website effectiveness.

FRAMINGHAM, MA – October 24, 2017. How well do manufacturers perform when it comes to website marketing? Do their sites follow the latest lead generation best practices? Or are these sites stuck in the last century? Precision Marketing Group (PMG) announced that it recently investigated these questions in its new comprehensive study titled Digital Lead Generation for Manufacturers in 2018: An Analysis of Website Effectiveness. It is free for anyone to download from the PMG website.

Why the focus on manufacturers? Susan LaPlante-Dube, one of PMG’s two principals, explains: “We’d been hearing that the manufacturing industry was lagging way behind when it came to inbound strategies, specifically those related to websites. We wanted to see for ourselves if this was true.”

To do this, PMG identified 14 marketing best practices that all manufacturing firms should follow to maximize their website traffic and lead building potential. These best practices were organized in terms of website content, lead generation, optimization, and social media. Lead generation, in particular, was a big focus since this is what drives marketing and sales—in other words, is the website working hard enough to deliver qualified leads who will eventually “convert” and become customers?

PMG conducted a study of 100 manufacturing firm websites, reviewing each site individually to determine how well they met the predefined criteria. The final study is a summary of the results and includes explanations regarding each best practice’s significance.

PMG principal Maureen Condon says the study is available to anyone, but those working in manufacturing should find it particularly beneficial. She provides this teaser: “It was interesting to discover that 85 percent of the manufacturing websites we reviewed did not put any of their content behind lead generation forms. These companies are losing potential sales. ‘Gating’ content, as we say, is an excellent way to get prospects’ info and stay in front of them through a lead nurturing process.”
