Arizona Woman Files Xarelto Lawsuit Claiming Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion
October 13, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit filed by an Arizona woman who claims manufacturers of Xarelto, Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG, should be held accountable for adverse events associated with the drug.
The case (No. 2:16-cv-01359) claims that side effects of Xarelto caused her to suffer a life-threatening hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, a serious medical condition where the sac around the heart is filled with blood. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana and is among thousands of others claiming the drug is dangerous.
Xarelto is a prescription medicine used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation, not caused by a heart valve problem. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and to help reduce the risk of the conditions occurring again. Additionally, it can be used to reduce the risk of forming a blood clot in the legs and lungs of people who have just had knee or hip replacement surgery, according to the Xarelto website.
Since the drug was approved in 2011, however, patients have reported suffering serious life-threatening conditions as a result of using the drug. Alleged side effects of the drug include hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, epidural hematoma, stroke, heart attack, rectal bleeding, pulmonary embolism, brain hemorrhages, and internal bleeding. Many patients have gone on to file lawsuits claiming that companies such as Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson should be held accountable for marketing what they claim companies knew was a dangerous drug. Xarelto has no known reversal agents that are FDA approved at this time.
“Our lawsuits allege that the manufacturers failed to warn our clients about the severe side effects from which our clients suffered while taking the drug,” said attorney Laurence Banville, a contributor to the Xarelto litigation updates on TheProductLawyers.com. “We are speaking with families who have had brain bleeds, gastrointestinal bleeds, vaginal bleeding, and bleeding from trauma where hospitalization and extreme measures were taken by medical staff to help save the patient’s life,” Banville continued. “We look forward to fighting for the rights of our clients and pursuing just compensation for the injuries and hospitalization.”
